Julia Baker

Julia Baker is an abstract expressionist painter based in Tiburon, with a studio in Sausalito. She draws continual inspiration from fog-draped hillsides, shifting tides, and the quiet drama of the natural world. Rather than depict landscapes literally, her work translates their rhythms and atmospheres through layered paint, collage, and gestural mark-making. Her process begins intuitively: pouring, scraping, and layering materials, allowing forms to emerge gradually, much like patterns in nature. Ephemeral elements such as light, weather, and movement often become central themes, reflected in the textures and tonal shifts across her surfaces. Julia’s paintings invite viewers to sense rather than simply see, to feel the movement of wind, water, or time within the abstraction. By distilling nature to its essential gestures, she creates works that feel rooted and dreamlike, personal and expansive.
